Since this is my little quiet spot

And I don't really want to put it out there on a more public space where it can get loud when I'm not really sure how I feel or what to think....

Lucas Bryant tweeted about how he was looking forward to beginning filming on Haven season 5 and waiting for Eric and Emily and Adam... and not Emma. Which is a little upsetting. Because while I liked Haven from the first episode, Jennifer and Dukifer made me obsessed with it. And I'm a little tired of female characters dying. Not just on this show, though Haven has a recognized problem with it. I'm tired, in general of female characters only being props to male character development. And I'm tired of writers congratulating themselves for being brave and daring for killing off a character (yet another female because they're alway expendable) as though it's novel. It's not novel anymore it's frankly frustrating.

I can't stay emotionally invested in a story if there's nothing left for me to do so.

If Emma Lahanna is not coming back as Jennifer, I don't think I'm coming back as a viewer. I can always buy the Season 5 DVD box set from an emotionally safe distance.

I don't know. I'm reacting to a tweet on twitter. Rather like a twit myself I guess. But it's what I've been thinking for awhile. I want Dukifer. I'm not sure I want Haven without it.

  1. I am going to push into your little quite spot here and say that I agree with you completely here, especially your “Because while I liked Haven from the first episode, Duke/Jennifer and Dukifer made me obsessed with it.” comment as I am in the exact same position. While I like Audrey and Nathan, I have never felt as emotionally invested in them in over four seasons as I got over only one season of Duke & Jennifer.

I also understand when you say, “If Emma Lahanna is not coming back as Jennifer, I don't think I'm coming back as a viewer”, I am not sure I really want to watch the show either as her and Duke were my reason for falling in love with the show in the first place during Season 4. I really want Dukifer back for season 5, and I have a really bad sinking feeling that she will not be. This is also in reaction to a tweet, this one from Eric Balfour, but he rather recently tweeted to Emma herself that “I miss seeing your [Emma Lahana’s] face”.

Haven does have considerable issues with killing off (or making them disappear) perfectly wonderful “secondary” female characters, Jennifer, Claire, Jordan, Jess, Eleanor, ect. Almost makes me wonder if Emily Rose does not have some sort of rider in her contract that she will be the only female character to remain on the show?

I also want Dukifer to return for Season 5 and I am pretty sure I don’t want Haven without the two of them.

    1. I don't think that Emily Rose would have such a contract. I don't even think she could garner that much clout. Haven certainly isn't the only show on TV to have this "Women Are Expendable" problem wherein their primary function is support the development of a male character. And such a rider still wouldn't explain the complete lack of information we have on women like Nathan's mother and Duke's mother. Honestly, it's like women don't really matter to these writers. And I don't think that the actors think like that. Eric Balfour has spoken of it though he has spoken of it in terms of an attachment to Duke's curse - and I've dealt with that in Stay. Also, as a rule, I don't blame working actors for doing their jobs. I actually prefer that they simply do that - their jobs. I watched my fave soap opera, OLTL get shredded by back stage agendas. I'd rather not go through that again - which is possibly why I find the disconnect relatively easy with series since then.

I've wondered if there would be something about Audrey herself - the woman we came to know as Mara - that would cause this. But with rumors running that suddenly someone from another SyFy show is going to drop in and explain how the Troubles are some genetic affliction I've given up on the writers having that much story craft. SyFy seems to be hijacking the holy shit out of this show and littering it with the actors of other series. I was deeply disappointed with the William story line. I thought it was too convoluted. It felt patchy. Which makes sense as the character was written for Colin Ferguson. Who BTW, doesn't seem to be coming back for Season 5 either. So what the hell was all that shit for?

I realise there is a major complication to writing a series as opposed to a story or novel or movie. Things have to be open ended enough to allow for the series to continue with a certain amount of "indefinitely" while also being ready for a conclusion in the even of being cancelled. And it would certainly seem that the atmosphere at SyFy causes even less stability since we, as fans, are called on to do frankly ridiculous things to prove we fucking exist. Not that I should complain. Drunk tweeting is fun. But if Colin was written in to Season 4, just how much can these writers know about their own story? And even if they had the story line developed, how do they keep their arcs in place if they are told for whom they will be writing season to season?

Fans have been waiting for the answers to questions we've been asking for quite some time. And repeatedly we are given notice that our investment isn't going to be paid off -- emotional or otherwise. I'm not actually someone who tunes in to be disappointed. Been there, done that, not going back. Good thing I didn't, in fact, get the chance to crack open that 40 year old bottle of vodka the night they announced season 5. And, I can read and write tons of Dukifer fic. It's always swirling.

Thanks for reading and commenting. Whoever you are, you're welcome to make some noise in my quiet little spot.
